Assault/Bite Dog course

Duration: 6 to 8 weeks (30 – 40 working days)

Students: Up to 10

Pre-Requisites

  • Physically fit
  • Must be able to lift 40 kg.
  • Must be affiliated with K9 unit or association
  • Must have some type of experience with dogs
  • Must not possess fear of dogs
  • Must be willing to accept wearing biting equipment

Course Description

This course is designed to train and prepare basic patrol dogs and handlers to be mission ready for any mission task. Handlers are expected to be familiar with the K9 deployment guidelines. Training will include theoretical and practical exercises with different scenarios. Upon completion, trainees must successfully pass the JNK9C K-9 Basic Patrol Dog certification.

  • Psychology of the K9 and how he thinks.
  • K9 Drives
  • Rewards
  • Timing of commands and /or corrections
  • Handler safety, Dog bites.
  • Proper Equipment and how to use it.
  • Basic search types, building, open area etc.
  • Scents: how they travel and why?
  • Planning considerations.
  • Handler and K9 protecting each other.
